Colossians 2:14 -16 The Handwriting of Ordinances

Hebrews 9:10 (margin) "Ordinances" - are "rites" or “ceremonies" - the ceremonial law.

The Ten Commandments are not rites or ceremonies, nor do they deal with "meats", "drink" or "new moons".

"By the handwritings of ordinances the apostle most evidently means the ceremonial law." Dr Adam Clarke (Methodist)

"The Jewish ceremonial law is here represented." Dr Albert Barnes (Presbyterian)

The Seventh-day Sabbath was not Nailed to the Cross

“Sabbath days which are a shadow of good things to come." Colossians 2:16

This is the only place in the New Testament where "Sabbath days" do not refer to the seventh-day Sabbath. The Sabbath days here are a shadow of things to come. They are therefore typical

  1. The Seventh-day Sabbath is a memorial which points back not to things "to come". The yearly Sabbaths were typical and therefore pointed to things "to come".
  2. The Sabbath is never called an ordinance. The “Passover” was an ordinance. Exodus 12:43. Numbers 9:14
  3. The Sabbath was made before sin entered, hence it was before any types.

Dr Adam Clarke (Methodist). "There is no intimation here that the Sabbath was done away or that its moral use was superseded. I have shown elsewhere that `Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy,' is a command of perpetual obligation and can never be superseded."

Dr Albert Barnes (Presbyterian). “No part of the moral Law - not one of the Ten Commandments can be spoken of as 'a shadow of good things to come'. These commandments are from the nature of the Moral Law, of perpetual and universal application."
