WHAT IS SIN?

“In order to let Jesus into our hearts, we must stop sinning. The only definition for sin that we have in the Bible is that it is the transgression of the law. The law is far reaching in its claims, and we must bring our hearts into harmony with it.” Signs of Times, March 3, 1890.

“Now, we want to understand what sin is; that it is the transgression of God's law. This is the only definition given in the Scriptures. Therefore we see that those who claim to be led of God, and go right away from him and his law, do not search the Scriptures.” Review and Herald, April 3, 1888

“What are we doing? Do we say," Believe, believe on Christ, and that is all? If we have not the faith that works by love, and purifies the soul from every stain of sin, then we have a spurious faith. Christ is not the minister of sin. And what is sin? The only definition given in God's word is, "Sin is the transgression of the law;" and the apostle Paul' declares, "Where no law is, there is no transgression." Signs of Times, November 24, 1887

“Only Definition of Sin, ‘Sin is the transgression of the law.’ This is the only definition of sin. Without the law there can be no transgression. ‘By the law is the knowledge of sin!’ The standard of righteousness is exceeding broad, prohibiting every evil thing.” SDA Bible Commentary, Volume 7, page 951.

“Sin is an intruder, for whose presence no reason can be given. It is mysterious, unaccountable; to excuse it is to defend it. Could excuse for it be found, or cause be shown for its existence, it would cease to be sin. Our only definition of sin is that given in the word of God; it is ‘the transgression of the law;’ it is the outworking of a principle at war with the great law of love which is the foundation of the divine government.” Great Controversy, page 493.

It is impossible to explain the origin of sin, or to give a reason for its existence. It is an intruder, for whose existence no reason can be given. It is mysterious, unaccountable; to excuse it, is to defend it. Could it be excused, could a cause be shown for its existence, it would cease to be sin. Our only definition of sin is that given in the word of God; it is the transgression of the law." 4 Spiritual Gifts, page 316.

The commandments of God are comprehensive and far reaching; in a few words they unfold the whole duty of man. "Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. You shall love thy neighbor as thyself" (Mark 12:30, 31). In these words the length and breadth, the depth and height, of the law of God is comprehended; for Paul declares, ‘Love is the fulfilling of the law’ (Romans 13:10). The only definition we find in the Bible for sin is that sin is the transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4). 1 Selected Messages, pages 320.

The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:1-17

And God spoke all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

1

You shall have no other gods before me.

2
Thou shall not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: You shall not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them. For I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

3

You shall not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain. For the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain.

4
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shall you labor, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shall not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

5

Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God gives thee.

6

You shall not kill.

7

You shall not commit adultery.

8

You shall not steal.

9

You shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

10

You shall not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shall not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.
