Many years ago I was sitting down watching television when I heard
a knock on the door. I opened the door and there were two Jehovah’s Witness men
there holding some religious magazines. We started having a discussion about
heaven and the New Jerusalem. They were very adamant that only a literal
144,000 (1.44 x 105!) people would go to heaven. They are composed
entirely of New Testament saints. They live in Paradise A, while the great
multitude live in the new earth, Paradise B. The great multitude are made up of
all the Old Testament saints and the vast majority of New Testament saints.
Nobody in the Old Testament goes to heaven. Many of the New Testament saints
(Peter, James, John etc.) are in supposed to be in the 144,000.
Needless to say, the Witness’s view is riddled with holes. When discussing the 144,000 with Witnesses, make them realize that they are being inconsistent in how they interpret the texts where the 144,000 are mentioned. They insist that there are exactly 144,000 of these people, no more and no less, making it a literal number, but they interpret every other detail about this group in a symbolic manner.
If they were consistent, they would have to conclude that the 144,000 are Jews, drawn equally from the twelve tribes of Israel (most of which are now unrecognizably lost), that they are all male virgins who do not lie and who have two names literally written on their foreheads. The problem is that almost none of the 9,000 Witnesses supposed to be members of this group fit this description. Many of them are married Gentile women with children, and they presumably have bent the truth more than a few times in their lives.
The only detail from the text that the Witnesses take literally is the number. Every other detail of the text is taken non-literally. They should either take all of the details literally or see the 144,000 as a symbol of the Church as a whole (as does virtually everyone else).
ROMAN CATHOLIC
No saints or people went to heaven before Jesus’ death.

By the year 100 A.D.,
Christians were honoring other Christians who had died, and asking for their
intercession. Many people think that honoring saints was something the Church
set up later, but it was part of Christianity from the very beginning. As a
matter of fact, this practice came from a long-standing tradition in the Jewish
faith of honoring prophets and holy people with shrines. The first saints were
martyrs, people who had given up their lives for the Faith in the persecution
of Christians.
JEHOVAH’S WITNESS
No saints or people went to heaven before
Jesus’ death.
“The 144,000 are faithful Christians whom God has chosen
“to rule as kings over the earth” with Jesus. When they die, they are
resurrected to life in heaven. (Revelation 5:10) Since the time of the
apostles, Jehovah has been choosing faithful Christians to be part of that
group of 144,000 kings.”

The Bible indicates that 144,000 people will be resurrected to
heavenly life. (Revelation 7:4) In the vision recorded at Revelation 14:1-3,
the apostle John saw “the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000.”
In this vision, “the Lamb” represents the resurrected Jesus. (John 1:29; 1
Peter 1:19) “Mount Zion” represents the exalted position of Jesus and the
144,000 who rule with him in the heavens.—Psalm 2:6; Hebrews 12:22.

The sum of the evidence, therefore, points to the “great crowd” as
representing all those persons who are not of the heavenly “bride” class, or
144,000 sealed ones, but who stand approved at the time of the “great
tribulation” and are preserved alive on earth.—See CONGREGATION (The
Christian Congregation of God); EARTH (Purpose); HEAVEN.

JEHOVAH’S WITNESS
“New
Jerusalem,” an expression that appears twice in the Bible, is a symbolic city
that represents the group of Jesus’ followers who go to heaven to rule with him
in God’s Kingdom. (Revelation 3:12; 21:2) The Bible shows that this
group can also be called the bride of Christ.
https://www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/questions/new-jerusalem/
The New Jerusalem, together with Christ on his
throne in this symbolic city, constitutes the “new heavens” that rule over the
“new earth,” which is human society on earth.

ROMAN CATHOLIC
It is the new Jerusalem, still imperfect because it is yet a pilgrim in history, but able to anticipate in some way the heavenly Jerusalem. Lastly, we can here refer to the Responsorial Psalm 121, belonging to the so-called "Song of Ascents". It is a hymn of the pilgrims' joy who, going up toward the holy city and having reached its doors, address the peace-greeting to them: shalom! According to popular etymology Jerusalem is interpreted as a "city of peace", whose peace the Messiah, Son of David, would have established in the fullness of time. We recognize in Jerusalem the figure of the Church, sacrament of Christ and of his Kingdom.

The Catholic Church places
the New Jerusalem in the eschatological role found in Revelation. Catholicism
also holds that the New Jerusalem already exists as a spiritual community in
Heaven, the Church triumphant, with an outpost on earth, the Church militant.
Together, the Church triumphant, Church militant, and Church suffering form the Church universal. Augustine of Hippo, a Doctor of
the Church and Church Father, draws inspiration from John's account of the New
Jerusalem to outline this view in his monumental work The City of God.
The Catholic Encyclopedia
article on "Heaven" states that Catholic theologians deem more
appropriate that there should be a special and glorious abode, in which the
blessed have their peculiar home and where they usually abide, even though they
be free to go about in this world. For the surroundings in the midst of which
the blessed have their dwelling must be in accordance with their happy state;
and the internal union of charity which joins them in affection must find its
outward expression in community of habitation. At the end of the world, the
earth together with the celestial bodies will be gloriously transformed into a
part of the dwelling-place of the blessed (Revelation 21). Hence there seems to
be no sufficient reason for attributing a metaphorical sense to those numerous
utterances of the Bible which suggest a definite dwelling-place of the blessed.
Theologians, therefore, generally hold that the heaven of the blessed is a
special place with definite limits. Naturally, this place is held to exist, not
within the earth, but, in accordance with the expressions of Scripture, without
and beyond its limits. All further details regarding its locality are quite
uncertain. The Church has decided nothing on this subject.

According to JW doctrine, the bride is the heavenly 144,000 only.
The great multitude are saved but are not the bride. No bride in the Old
Testament. According to the Bible all the redeemed [Old Testament/New
Testament] are the bride.

New Jerusalem is made up of a
group of Jesus’ followers, the bride of Christ. New Jerusalem is called “the
bride, the Lamb’s wife.” (Revelation 21:9, 10) In this symbolic
description, the Lamb refers to Jesus Christ. (John 1:29; Revelation 5:12)
“The Lamb’s wife,” Christ’s bride, represents Christians who will be united
with Jesus in heaven. The Bible likens the relationship between Jesus and these
Christians to that of a husband and wife. (2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:23-25)
In addition, the foundation stones of New Jerusalem are inscribed with “the 12
names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb.” (Revelation 21:14) This detail helps to
confirm the identity of New Jerusalem, since Christians who are called to life
in heaven are “built up on the foundation of the apostles and prophets.”—Ephesians
2:20.

themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

with them, Ezekiel 16:17
Moreover thou hast taken thy
sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou
sacrificed unto them to be devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,
Ezekiel 16:20
And in all thine abominations
and thy whoredoms thou hast not remembered the days of thy youth, when thou wast naked and bare, and wast
polluted in thy blood. Ezekiel 16:22
Thou hast built thy high
place at every head of the way, and hast made thy beauty to be abhorred, and

Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Because thy filthiness was poured out, and thy nakedness discovered through thy
whoredoms with thy lovers, and with all the idols of thy abominations, and by
the blood of thy children, which thou didst give unto them; Ezekiel 16:36
Wherefore say unto the house
of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Are ye polluted after the manner of your
fathers? and commit ye whoredom after their abominations? Ezekiel 20:30

Thus she committed her
whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and
with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself. Ezekiel

bruised the breasts of her virginity, and poured their whoredom upon her.

only one in every 700,000 will be there. That is only one person every 5 days

But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was
Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the
holy gods: and before him I told the dream, saying, Daniel 4:8
O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the
spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth
thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation
thereof. Daniel 4:9
This dream I king Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar,
declare the interpretation thereof, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom
are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for
the spirit of the holy gods is in thee. Daniel 4:18
There is a man in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy
gods; and in the days of thy father light and understanding and wisdom, like
the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar thy
father, the king, I say, thy father, made master of the magicians, astrologers,
Chaldeans, and soothsayers; Daniel 5:11

saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor
by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts. Zechariah 4:6
Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should
hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts hath sent in his spirit by
the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the LORD of hosts.
Zechariah 7:12
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants
of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look
upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for
him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. Zechariah 12:10
4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than
Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his
gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaks. 10
For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is
God. 16 But now they desire a better

And I say unto you, That
many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and
Isaac, and Jacob, in the
kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 8:11
8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. 11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable. 13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. 14 For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country. 15 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned. 16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. Hebrews 11:8-16

Hebrews 11:16-20
And I say unto you, That
many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and
Isaac, and Jacob, in the
kingdom of

Moses and Elias talking with him. 4 Then
answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if
thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses,
and one for Elias.
Matthew 17:1-4
16
But now they desire a better country, that is,
an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath

faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because
they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's
commandment. 24 By faith Moses, when
he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices: my flesh also

And I heard a great voice out
of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell
with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them,
and be their God. Revelation 21:3
If each level or story in the New Jerusalem
was one kilometer high the city would have 216 million square kilometers of
floor space. That is seven times the surface area of Africa. How much room
would the angels take up? According to the Bible there are at least 100
million: “Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands
upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.” Revelation 5:11. One
level of the New Jerusalem would have a surface area of 360 thousand square
kilometers. If each angel had one hectare of floor space, you could fit 36
million on one level. If we allocate one entire level for worship how many
people could you seat? If each person were allocated 100 square meters (10
meters x 10 meters) you could easily fit 3.6 billion people in a worship
service. If only 144,000 people were in the New Jerusalem each person would have
1500 square kilometers of floor space. That is the equivalent of a square 39
kilometers wide or a circle 43 kilometers wide. Such figures seem unreasonable.
There are several verses [9] in the Bible indicating that there is
one hope and one heaven, not two. The 144,000 are made up of those who are
alive at the battle of Armageddon [10]. The great multitude [11] will join in
with the 144,000 in heaven at the wedding supper of the lamb.
The two men were quite sure that the New
Jerusalem could not land on the Earth because it would be too heavy! Such a
heavy object would affect the Earth’s rotation on its axis. The Bible says [1]
that the city is a cube 600 kilometers on each side. A cube that size would
have a volume of 216 million cubic kilometers. Since the building is like a
house it is mostly empty space. If we melted, it down it would probably be only
600 x 600 x 10 kilometers in size. That is 3.6 million cubic kilometers. Gold
has a weight of 19.32 tons per cubic meter [2]. If we compare the volume of the
Earth [3] with the volume of the material in the New Jerusalem, we see that the
Earth’ volume is 302,000 times larger. The Earth’s mass is 85,864 times
heavier. The day length of Earth is 86,400 seconds. Placing such a large object
on the surface of the Earth might vary the day length by one second at the
most.
To accommodate the redeemed from all ages, the New Earth might be much larger than the Earth is today. The Earth’s current surface area is 510 million square kilometers. If it were the size of Jupiter, it would have 120 times as much surface area and could easily hold 60 billion people. If it were the same density as the Earth [3] is now it would weigh over 5,000 times as much as the Earth’s current mass. Such an object like the New Jerusalem would be like an ant landing on the back of an adult elephant.

Whether it be pure gold or gold tinted glass or whatever mixture, our planet with its current size has no problem with such an object.
