Two Laws Or One?

Sixty Questions By Paul Nethercott

Critics of the Sabbath claim that the Ten Commandments were part of the Ceremonial Law of Moses and were nailed to the cross. Two main websites claim this. Sabbath Keepers Refuted [http://www.bible.ca/7-sabbath-questions.htm] and Mark Martin’s website [http://www.exadventist.com/Home/Sabbath/tabid/53/Default.aspx]

SIXTY QUESTIONS

1. The claim that the Ceremonial Law was called holy before Calvary does not mean it is eternal. It is not called holy after the resurrection of Christ but rather the Ten Commandments are. Romans 7:12.

2. If the Ten Commandments are 90% binding and 10% abolished is the same true of the Ceremonial Law?

3. If there was only one law [Ten Commandments and Ceremonial Law Combined] and it was abolished 100% on the cross how can 90% still be left?

4. If there was one law and it was abolished at Calvary then the Ten Commandments should be abolished 100%?

5.  If  the  Ten  Commandments are  called  Holy,  Just  and  Good  after  Calvary  [Romans  7:12]  is  the Ceremonial Law still Holy, Just and Good?

6. Is there one law or two?

7. If there is only one law and we are judged by 90% of the Ten Commandments [James 2:8-12] in the judgment, will we be judged by 90% of the Ceremonial Law as well?

8. There are 319 references to the Ten Commandments after Calvary upholding them. Why are there not 319 references to the Ceremonial Law if it is all the one law?

9. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then do we have to keep 90% of the Ceremonial Law?

10. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then will we observe 90% of the Ceremonial Law in heaven?

11. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then if one [Ceremonial Law] was abolished 100% why not 100% of the Ten Commandments?

12. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then if we have to keep the “principles” of the Ten Commandments do we have to keep the “principles” of the Ceremonial Law?

13. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then why wasn’t the Ceremonial Law written on stone?

14. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then why does Saint Paul condemn people for breaking the Ten Commandments but not the ceremonial law?

15. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then will we have animal sacrifices in heaven? The Bible states there will be no more death [Revelation 21:4] and no temple [Revelation 21:22] in the New Jerusalem.

16. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then how can the Sabbath have different attributes to the other nine of the Ten Commandments?

17. If the Ceremonial Law and the Ten Commandments have exactly the same attributes then why does Matthew and Revelation both have 84 references to the Ten Commandments? Didn’t the Ten Commandments loose their importance after Calvary?

18.  Did the Ceremonial Law [Galatians 3:19] exist before Adam sinned? Did any of the Ten Commandments exist before man sinned?

19. If the Ten Commandments were abolished at Calvary in 31 AD, how did the Apostle John see them in heaven [Revelation 11:19, 15:5] sixty years later in AD 96 on the island of Patmos?

20.  If  there  is  only  one  law  how  can  the  Sabbath  be  different  to  all  the  other  nine  of  the  Ten Commandments if they all have the same attributes?

21. If the Ten Commandments are part of the Ceremonial Law how can the Sabbath be different to the other nine?

22. How can the Sabbath be Ceremonial and the other nine be Moral if the Ten Commandments are 100% part of the Ceremonial Law?

23. How can one of the Ten Commandments be CEREMONIAL and the other nine be MORAL if no such distinction exists?

24. If the Ten Commandments are the Ceremonial Law and are 90% binding after Calvary then animal sacrifices are 90% binding today?

31. Exodus 20:1 states that all of the Ten Commandments were given to Israel so how can one be Jewish and the other nine Christian?

32. The Sabbath was based on events 2,500 years before Moses.

33. There is nothing in the fourth commandment [Exodus 20:8-11] about animal sacrifices, unlike the annual [Passover, day of Atonement, Pentecost] Sabbaths.

34. The Sabbath commandment has no more references to animal sacrifices than does “Thou shall not kill” or “Thou shall not commit adultery.”

35. The Sabbath is based on the Genesis creation account and not on animal sacrifices.

36. God kept the Sabbath by his own example [Genesis 2:1-3] but God never kept the annual Sabbaths. Jesus never sacrificed animals while on earth.

37. The Ten Commandment Sabbath is weekly [Exodus 20:8-11] whereas the Ceremonial Sabbaths were annual [Exodus 12:1-3].

38. The seventh day Sabbath divides [Exodus 20:8-11] the week. The Ceremonial Sabbaths can be on any day of the week.

39. The Ceremonial Sabbaths require the shedding of blood [Exodus 12:1-21] the seventh day Sabbath [Exodus 20:8-11] requires rest only.

40. The Ceremonial Sabbaths divides the year [Exodus 12:1-3] not the week.

42. Is the New Covenant 90% Jewish and 10% Christian?

43. If the Ten Commandments are abolished but we still have to keep them is the same true of the Ceremonial Law?

44. Ten Commandments were written on stone.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give you tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that you may teach them. Exodus 24:12.

And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon Mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God. Exodus 31:18.

15 And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. 16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. Exodus

32:15-16.

1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew you two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which you broke. 2 And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto Mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount. 3 And no man shall come up with you, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount. 4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto Mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. Exodus 34:1-4.

These words the LORD spoke unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me. Deuteronomy 5:22.

3 And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand. 4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the LORD spoke unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me. Deuteronomy 10:3-4.

Jesus Christ is the Chief corner Stone:

And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:4

This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Acts 4:11

4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, 5 You also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. 7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 1 Peter

2:4-8

45. The Ten Commandments are God’s covenant not just one of the Ten Commandments only.

And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. Exodus 34:28

And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the Ten Commandments, which the LORD spoke unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me. Deuteronomy 10:4

And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even Ten Commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. Deuteronomy 4:13

46. God’s Covenant is all [100%] ten of the Ten Commandments, not just one [10%] out of ten.

27 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write you these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel. 28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments. 29 And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. Exodus 34:27-29.

9 There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb, when the LORD made a covenant with the children of Israel, when they came out of the land of Egypt. 21 And I have set there a place for the ark, wherein is the covenant of the LORD, which he made with our fathers, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. 1 Kings 8:9, 21.

9 When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water: 10 And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spoke with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. 11 And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant. 12 And the LORD said unto me, Arise, get you down quickly from hence; for your people which you has brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image. Deuteronomy 9:9-12

47. The Ten Commandments were place inside the Ark of the Covenant. Exodus 25:16.

48. The Ceremonial law was placed on the outside of the Ark. Deuteronomy 31:26.

49. The Old Covenant was not abolished by Jesus in 31 AD but rather by the rebellious Jews who sinned at

Mount Sinai. Exodus 32:19, Deuteronomy 9:1-18, Hebrews 8:8-13, Jeremiah 31:31-34.

50. The New Covenant is still the keeping of the Ten Commandments. Hebrews 8:8-13, Jeremiah 31:31-34.

The Old Covenant = Love God Deuteronomy 6:1-16

Deuteronomy 11:22

The New Covenant = Love God 1 John 5:2-3

1 John 2:5

1 John 4:7-8

51. The claim is made that the Sabbath commandment is half moral and half ceremonial. The ceremonial portion [The Seventh day] was abolished at Calvary but the moral portion [One day in seven] still remains. If the seventh day Sabbath is ceremonial, did the Ceremonial Law [Galatians 3:19] exist before man sinned?

52. The Bible calls Exodus 20:1-17 the Ten Commandments [Exodus 34:28, Deuteronomy 10:4, Deuteronomy 4:1]. The fourth commandment is one commandment only. It is not two separate commandments, one moral and one ceremonial, but one only.

53. Why does the Bible say that the Seventh day itself is blessed and sanctified [Genesis 2:3]? The moral part is the seventh day and not the other six!

54. The seventh day Sabbath is 100% of the fourth commandment. If you remove that you have 0% left.

55. If the fourth commandment is 50% MORAL and 50% CEREMONIAL is the same true of all the other nine like “Thou shall not kill”.

56. Where does the Bible say that 50% is moral and 50% is ceremonial?

57. Are the ceremonial laws half moral and so we must observe 50% of the Passover each year?

58. The Bible states that we will be judged by whole commandments [James 2:8-12] and not part of commandments.

59. Is the Sabbath commandment half Jewish and half Christian?

60. When Jesus observed the Sabbath [Luke 4:16, Mark 2:28] which half was he observing, the moral half or the ceremonial half?

61. Why does the book of Hebrews [Hebrews 4:4-9] state the God rested the seventh day and there remains a rest [Greek Sabbatismos] for the people of God. Why is it the seventh day if that was the ceremonial half that was nailed to the cross?

62. If half of each commandment was abolished at Calvary why does the Bible us the same wording after Calvary [Romans 13:9, Ephesians 6:2] as in Exodus 20?
