The Isle Of Patmos

The book of Revelation presents two groups of people existing from John's day right through to the end of sin. The commandment keepers (12:17, 14:12, 22:14) and the commandment breakers (13:1-12). The commandment keepers enter the city (22:4) while the lawless are excluded (21:8, 22:15). These two groups of people represent the great controversy between Christ and Satan and which side they are on. In Revelation 11:19 John sees in vision the heavenly ark of the Covenant which contains the law of God.

33 And you shall hang up the veil under the taches, that you may bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. 34 And you shall put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place. Exodus 26:33-34

And you shall put it before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with you. Exodus 30:6

1 At that time the LORD said unto me, Hew you two tables of stone like unto the first, and come up unto me into the mount, and make you an ark of wood. 2 And I will write on the tables the words that were in the first tables which you brake, and you shall put them in the ark. 3 And I made an ark of shittim wood, and hewed two tables of stone like unto the first, and went up into the mount, having the two tables in mine hand. 4 And he wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten commandments, which the LORD spoke unto you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly: and the LORD gave them unto me. 5 And I turned myself and came down from the mount, and put the tables in the ark which I had made; and there they be, as the LORD commanded me. Deuteronomy 10:1-5

And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and unto all the elders of Israel. Deuteronomy 31:9

The ark was hollow and held the two tables of the Decalogue inside. The word testament used in Revelation 11:19 is referring to the eternal law of God.

 

Ark Of The Covenant

And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof. Exodus 25:10

And thou shalt put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, that the ark may be borne with them. Exodus 25:14

The staves shall be in the rings of the ark: they shall not be taken from it. Exodus 25:15

And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee. Exodus 25:16

And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. Exodus 25:21

And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. Exodus 25:22

And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat. Leviticus 16:2

 

And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof. Numbers 3:31

 

And when the camp sets forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering veil, and cover the ark of testimony with it: Numbers 4:5

 

And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spoke unto him. Numbers 7:89

 

And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days' journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days' journey, to search out a resting place for them. Numbers 10:33

And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee. Numbers 10:35

 

But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp. Numbers 14:44

That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, Deuteronomy 31:25

Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. Deuteronomy 31:26

 

Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; Hebrews 9:4

 

And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thundering, and an earthquake, and great hail. Revelation 11:19

 

Tabernacle of God

A Psalm of David. LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill? Psalms 15:1

 

For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. Psalms 27:5

 

And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD. Psalms 27:6

 

O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles. Psalms 43:3

 

There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. Psalms 46:4

 

I will abide in thy tabernacle for ever: I will trust in the covert of thy wings. Selah. Psalms 61:4

 

A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. Hebrews 8:2

Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern showed to thee in the mount. Hebrews 8:5

 

For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the showbread; which is called the sanctuary. Hebrews 9:2

And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; Hebrews 9:3

Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. Hebrews 9:6

The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Hebrews 9:8

But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; Hebrews 9:11

Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. Hebrews 9:21

 

We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. Hebrews 13:10

 

And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. Revelation 13:6

 

And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened: Revelation 15:5

 

And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. Revelation 21:3

 

Tables of the Law

And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them. Exodus 24:12

 

And he gave unto Moses, when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sinai, two tables of testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God. Exodus 31:18

 

And Moses turned, and went down from the mount, and the two tables of the testimony were in his hand: the tables were written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they written. Exodus 32:15

And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. Exodus 32:16

And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount. Exodus 32:19

 

And the LORD said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first: and I will write upon these tables the words that were in the first tables, which thou brakes. Exodus 34:1

And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. Exodus 34:4

And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. Exodus 34:28

And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him. Exodus 34:29

 

And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone. Deuteronomy 4:13

 

These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me. Deuteronomy 5:22

 

When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water: Deuteronomy 9:9

And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. Deuteronomy 9:10

And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant. Deuteronomy 9:11

So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands. Deuteronomy 9:15

And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes. Deuteronomy 9:17

The Testimony Of God

As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept. Exodus 16:34

 

And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee. Exodus 25:16

And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. Exodus 25:21

And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. Exodus 25:22

And thou shalt hang up the veil under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. Exodus 26:33

In the tabernacle of the congregation without the veil, which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning before the LORD: it shall be a statute for ever unto their generations on the behalf of the children of Israel. Exodus 27:21

 

And thou shalt put it before the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, before the mercy seat that is over the testimony, where I will meet with thee. Exodus 30:6

And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy. Exodus 30:36

But thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. Numbers 1:50

But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony. Numbers 1:53

And on the day that the tabernacle was reared up the cloud covered the tabernacle, namely, the tent of the testimony: and at even there was upon the tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until the morning. Numbers 9:15

 

And it came to pass on the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, that the cloud was taken up from off the tabernacle of the testimony. Numbers 10:11

 

And thou shalt lay them up in the tabernacle of the congregation before the testimony, where I will meet with you. Numbers 17:4

And the LORD said unto Moses, Bring Aaron's rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not. Numbers 17:10

 

These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of Egypt, Deuteronomy 4:45

 

Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee. Deuteronomy 6:17

And when thy son asks thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you? Deuteronomy 6:20

 

Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan. Joshua 4:16

 

And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou does, and whithersoever thou turns thyself: 1 Kings 2:3

 

And he brought forth the king's son, and put the crown upon him, and gave him the testimony; and they made him king, and anointed him; and they clapped their hands, and said, God save the king. 2 Kings 11:12

 

And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the

LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them. 2 Kings 17:15

 

And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant. 2 Kings 23:3

 

And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for the which I have made provision. 1 Chronicles 29:19

 

Then they brought out the king's son, and put upon him the crown, and gave him the testimony, and made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and said, God save the king. 2 Chronicles 23:11

 

And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book. 2 Chronicles 34:31

 

Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them. Nehemiah 9:34

 

The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. Psalms 19:7

 

All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies. Psalms 25:10

 

For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: Psalms 78:5

Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies: Psalms 78:56

Eternally Established In Heaven

The ark still contained the Testament Law when John was in vision 60 years after Jesus had gone back to heaven. The book of Revelation states:

11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightning, and voices, and thundering, and an earthquake, and great hail.

12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. 15:5 And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened:

22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

The Law In The Heavenly Temple

The New Testament books of Hebrews and Revelation picture Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary where the ark of the Covenant and the Ten Commandments are now present. Revelation 15:5 mentions the phrase 'tabernacle of the testimony' which according to the Old Testament was the place where the Decalogue was housed. Exodus 26:33,34; 30:6

The word testimony used in verse 5 is referring to the eternal law of God (Exodus 25:16, 21, 22, 31:18, 32:15, 34:29, Psalms 19:7, Psalms 78:5, Psalms 81:3,4, Isaiah 8:16,20). The ark still contained the Testament Law when John was in vision in 96 AD. This phrase is found in the OT referring to the Tables of Law in the Mosaic sanctuary.

30 And you shall rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof which was showed you in the mount. 31 And you shall make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made: 32 And you shall hang it upon four pillars of shittim wood overlaid with gold: their hooks shall be of gold, upon the four sockets of silver. 33 And you shall hang up the veil under the taches, that you may bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. 34 And you shall put the mercy seat upon the ark of the testimony in the most holy place. 35 And you shall set the table without the veil, and the candle stick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and you shall put the table on the north side. 36 And you shall make an hanging for the door of the tent, of blue, and Exodus 26:30-35

In the tabernacle of the congregation without the veil, which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall order it from evening to morning before the LORD: it shall be a statute for ever unto their generations on the behalf of the children of Israel. Exodus 27:21

26 And you shall anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, 36 And you shall beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with you: it shall be unto you most holy. Exodus 30:26,36

The tabernacle of the congregation, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is thereupon, and all the furniture of the tabernacle. Exodus 31:7

3 And you shall put therein the ark of the testimony, and cover the ark with the veil. 4 And you shall bring in the table, and set in order the things that are to be set in order upon it; and you shall bring in the candle stick, and light the lamps thereof. 5 And you shall set the altar of gold for the incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the hanging of the door to the tabernacle. Exodus 40:3-5

19 And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as the LORD commanded Moses. 20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the mercy seat above upon the ark: 21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the veil of the covering, and covered the ark of the testimony; as the LORD commanded Moses. Exodus 40:19-21

Without the veil of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall Aaron order it from the evening unto the morning before the LORD continually: it shall be a statute for ever in your generations. Leviticus 24:3.

The Book Of Hebrews

In Hebrews 8:8-12 the apostle Paul states that God will write the law in our minds. Paul in the book of Romans uses the same language to describe the Decalogue as a guide for right thinking (Romans 7:23-25; 8:7). This text in Hebrews is borrowed from the book of Jeremiah (31:31-34) where the OT prophet is clearly outlining obedience to the Decalogue. The phrase in Hebrews and Jeremiah is very similar to many others in the OT referring to having the Ten Commandments written in the mind

If you shall hearken unto the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if you turn unto the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 30:10

But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. Joshua 22:5

But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin. 2 Kings 10:31

And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him. 2 Kings 23:25

And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and prospered. 2 Chronicles 21:31

For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments. Ezra 7:10

Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. Job 22:22

The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. Psalms 37:31

The book of Hebrews closely parallels that of Revelation in the layout and functioning of the heavenly sanctuary. Both base their ideas on those originally laid out in the OT books of Exodus and Leviticus. In Hebrews chapter 8 we are clearly told that Chronicles is the High Priest in the heavenly Temple and then in chapter 9 we are shown how the layout of the earthly temple is a guide to that of the one above.

The New Covenant

What is the New Covenant spoken of in the book of Hebrews (8:8-12)? The Bible clearly portrays God's covenant as the Ten Commandments

27 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write you these words: for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel. 28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments. Exodus 34:27-28

Every Sabbath he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant. Leviticus 24:8

And if you shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that you will not do all my commandments, but that you break my covenant: Leviticus 26:15

Set the trumpet to your mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law. Hosea 8:1

But you are departed out of the way; you have caused many to stumble at the law; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, said the LORD of hosts. Malachi 2:8

The children of Israel promised at Sinai to obey all that God had told them (Exodus 19:8) but soon after they were worshipping the golden calf (Exodus 32:4). This covenant only lasted 40 days. The new covenant is also based on God's law being written on the heart (Hebrews 8:8-12). Both the Old and the New are part of the one everlasting Covenant which is the Eternal Law of God (1 Chronicles 16:17, Psalms 105:10, Isaiah 24:5).

Commandment 1

I am the LORD thy God, which have brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20:1-3.

1 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. Know you not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor

adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind. 1 Corinthians 6:9

Commandment 4

22 For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, said the LORD, so shall your seed and your name remain. 23 And it shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, said the LORD. Isaiah 66:22-23

17 And he said unto him, Why call you me good? There is none good but one, that is, God: but if you wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18 He said unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shall do no murder, Thou shall not commit adultery, Thou shall not steal, Thou shall not bear false witness, 19 Honor thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself. Matthew 19:17-19

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. Revelation 22:14

Commandment 5

Honor your father and thy mother: that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God
gives you. Exodus 20:12.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5

You shall not kill. Exodus 20:13.
