I. The Holy Spirit is a person!

Two central and irrefutable proof texts-

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Matthew 28:19

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen. 2 Corinthians 13:14

 

A. What is a person-

Definition of person- "One who had substance, completeness, self ­ existent, individuality and rationality.

Five tests to determine a person-

SUBSTANCE- being existence reality.

COMPLETENESS- that which is part doesn't satisfy the definition)

SELF­EXISTENT- continued by ones self, not by another- robot

INDIVIDUALITY- not some universal existence.

RATIONALITY- excludes the non­intellectual ­ rocks and plants

Is the HOLY SPIRIT an "it" or a "He"?

John 16:12­14

 

B. Masculine pronouns are used in reference to the Holy Spirit.

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:16

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. John 14:17

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:26

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: John 15:26

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. John 16:7

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: John 16:8

C. The Holy Spirit and Jesus are both our helper/lawyer between us and God-

Jesus sent "another comforter"- ("allos parakletos")

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:16

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. John 14:26

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: John 15:26

D. The Holy Spirit can be fellowshipped-

E. The "Holy Spirit" is in contrast to "unholy Spirit", who are persons-

And the scribes which came down from Jerusalem said, He hath Beelzebub, and by the prince of the devils casteth he out devils. Mark 3:22

And he called them unto him, and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan? Mark 3:23

And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Matthew 12:32

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 1 Timothy 4:1

And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. 1 John 3:24

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1

II. The Holy Spirit simply must be a person

A. The Holy Spirit is outright said to have a mind which energy does not.

And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:27

 

B. The Holy Spirit experience emotions, slights and injuries which energy does not.

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. Matthew 12:31

Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? Hebrews 10:29

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Acts 5:3

Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me; Romans 15:30

And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30

But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. Isaiah 63:10

 

C. The Holy Spirit evaluates, reasons and chooses with intelligent freewill

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will show you things to come. John 16:13

For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things; Acts 15:28

For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. 1 Corinthians 2:11

And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. Acts 8:39

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. Matthew 4:1

And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; Matthew 1:12

And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Luke 4:11

D. The Holy Spirit originates intelligent thought and speaks which energy cannot do.

As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. Acts 13:2

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:21

The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: Hebrews 9:8

Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, Hebrews 10:15

This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; Hebrews 10:16

And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Hebrews 10:17

F. The Holy Spirit takes actions of intelligent freewill, which energy cannot do.

Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. 2 Corinthians 3:6

For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. Galatians 6:8

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. Revelation 22:17

G. The Holy Spirit bears witness in a pattern that always involves a person-

III. The Holy Spirit is a divine person, like the Father

A. The Holy Spirit is outright Called God-

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Acts 5:3

Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. Acts 5:4

But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Matthew 12:28

But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. Luke 11:20

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Corinthians 3:17

Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: 2 Corinthians 3:2

 

B. The Holy Spirit shares Qualities that only God possesses-

Eternal like the Father-

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:14

Omnipresent like the Father-

Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? Psalms 139:7

Omniscient like the Father-

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 1 Corinthians 2:1

 

C. The Holy Spirit is divine in power-

To create:

Thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth. Psalms 104:30

To work miracles-

But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 1 Corinthians 12:11

To inspire prophets-

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:21

 

D. The Holy Spirit is divine in character-

E. The Holy Spirit speaks in the first person in the New Testament

Like Jesus, the Holy Spirit is Jehovah, although not the same person as the Father or the Son.

F. The Holy Spirit is called "Jehovah".

And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not? Exodus 17:7

G. The Holy Spirit is called is invoked as "Jehovah".

And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, Luke 2:27

Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, Luke 2:28

Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: Luke 2:29

And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. Acts 4:23

And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Acts 4:24

Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus. Acts 1:16

For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishopric let another take. Acts 1:20

And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ. 2 Thessalonians 3:5

The Holy Spirit is called "Jehovah of hosts".

H. The Holy Spirit is called "Jehovah, Most High".

I. Many divine titles & names applied to the Holy Spirit

The Spirit of Life

The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones, Ezekiel 37:1

And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry. Ezekiel 37:2

And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest. Ezekiel 37:3

Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Ezekiel 37:4

Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live: Ezekiel 37:5

The Spirit of the Lord Jehovah

The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; Isaiah 61:1

To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; Isaiah 61:2

To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. Isaiah 61:3

 

The Spirit of Holiness

And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead: Romans 1:4

Conclusion-

A. Summary of what the Holy Spirit is not-

The Holy Spirit is not some mystical, indefinite, indefinable, ethereal ­ like substance that enshrouds and permeates the universe like a fog.

He is not a mere influence, or a vague, impersonal power released in response to human needs.
